Donny Schatz took the lead from point leader Ricky Weiss on lap 16 and continued on to win for the second straight event with the NLRA Friday night at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. The win is Schatz's fourth career series victory, and third in NLRA action at River Cities. Schatz, for the second time in his career, went on to win the World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature also. Weiss finished second, with Brad Seng, Dustin Strand, and Shane Edginton, who started 19th, rounding out the top five. Jeff Hapala was the hard charger, improving 16 spots from 24th to finish eighth. Weiss will take a 60 point lead over Dustin Strand into Saturday nights event at the Devils Lake Speedway.

Another big week lies ahead during this 20th anniversary season for the NLRA and it's series regulars, as the series will run three races in as many days, with races at the Red River Co-op, River Cities, and Devils Lake Speedways.

Brad Seng, driver of the No. 12S S&S Transport MB Custom, won his first NLRA series feature of the season Saturday night at the Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush, MN. With the win, Seng's collected his 34th career NLRA series triumph, and fourth overall in Greenbush. Seng lead flag-to-flag in the 25 laps green-white-checkered affair. The race took just over six minutes to complete
After a third place run at the I-94 Speedway last Friday night, Cole Schill, driver of the No. 44 Mid Ag Dispatch MasterSbilt by JMR, won at the Viking Speedway last Saturday, Matt and Dave Smith were 1100 miles from home when they rounded out the top five respectively in their Polar Industries Capitals.
Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Lithia Toyota MasterSbilt by JMR, won the season opener at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks last Friday night. Defending Wissota national champion Dustin Strand finished second in the No. 71 RHR Swag Millenium, with Zach Naastad, driver of the No. Z17 Q&Z Plumbing Millenium third, Brad Seng, driver of the No. 12 S&S Transport MB Custom fourth, and Joey Pederson, driver of the No. 7P Dalhstrom Motors MB Custom rounding out the top five.
On Friday night, September the 8th, the NLRA will but a ribbon on its' 19th season with the sixth running of the 'Prelude to the Johnny' at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND. The event kicks off the three day, tenth annual John Seitz Memorial.
Last season, Elk Mound, Wisconsin's AJ Diemel, became the fourth native of the dairy state to win the Prelude in its' five years history. Adam Hensel of Barron, John Kaanta of Elk Mound, and Pat Doar on New Richmond, were winners of the event in 2011, 2012, and 2013 respectively. Ricky Weiss became the first non-Wisconsinite to win the race in 2014.
For the ninth time in series history, the NLRA will spend its' Labor Day weekend at the Viking Speedway in Alexandria, MN. The regulars of the NLRA series will take on the 51-year-old half-mile oval on the Douglas County Fairgrounds for the 38th time in series history.
Last season, for the first time ever, Viking aces Jeff Wildung and Zach Johnson were held out of the win column. Brad Seng, driver of the No. 12S S&S Transport MB Custom, and Don Shaw in the Shaw Trucking No. 42S, became just the third and fourth drivers not named Wildung or Johnson to win on Labor Day weekend in Alexandria. Dustin Strand, driver of the No. 71 Q&Z Plumbing & Heating Millenium, continued his hot streak last week going undefeated in both heats and both features first on Thursday night in Winnipeg at the Red River Co-Op Speedway and at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. The wins are his fifth and sixth of the season in NLRA action, and his tenth and eleventh with the series overall, as he now sits tied for seventh on the all-time wins list. He will head into the final four races of the season with the opportunity to tie and or break the record for wins in a single season, currently held by the late John Seitz, at seven victories. Strand has also won six of the last eight NLRA events, five of them have been sweeps, including four in a row.
The NLRA is set to head north to make it's lone appearance in Canada for the 2016 season on Thursday night at the Red River Co-Op Speedway in Winnipeg, before heading back south on Friday to once again share the spotlight with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.
On Thursday night, August the 25th, the NLRA makes its' 26th appearance at the Red River Co-Op Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for the third annual Can-Am Late Model Challenge. |
