Last season, for the first time ever, Viking aces Jeff Wildung and Zach Johnson were held out of the win column. Brad Seng, driver of the No. 12S S&S Transport MB Custom, and Don Shaw in the Shaw Trucking No. 42S, became just the third and fourth drivers not named Wildung or Johnson to win on Labor Day weekend in Alexandria.
Ricky Weiss in 2014 and Dave Mass in 2007 are the only other two to beat Vikings' dynamic duo on Labor Day Weekend.
Seng's win was his second of the season at the speedway, as he also won on May 23rd last season. Two races at the Speedway were lost to rain last season, including the second half of the Memorial Day Double header on May 24th, and round four of last seasons' Minnesota Speedweek on June 27th during the heat races. Shaw has been dominant in weekly competition at Viking this season, as he has won six of the ten late model features this season. The other four races were won by four different drivers, and the list is a who's who in Late Model racing in our area. Jeremy Keller, Brad Seng, John Kaanta, and Zach Johnson are the other winners. Shaw is also the point leader heading into the final weekend for points at the Speedway, as he leads all three members of the Meyer family, Casey being the closest to Shaw, with 32 markers separating the pair. |

On Monday evening, September 5th, the series heads back to the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND. Mike Balcaen, Shaw, and Dustin Strand have won the previous three NLRA events at the Speedway this season. Balcaen returned to win the event on June 17th, just one week removed from a grinding crash that destroyed his No. 10 Sylmak, Inc. Black Diamond.
Shaw held on to win on June 25th despite a left rear tire that was going flat in the waning laps. Strand parked the No. 71 Q&Z Plumbing Heating Millenium in victory lane last Friday night, securing both his sixth win at River Cities, and his sixth series win of the season.
Only four drivers have finished inside the top ten in all three NLRA events at the Speedway this season. Mike Balcaen, Brad Seng, Jeff Hapala, driver of the No. 16S Sweets by Tay Rocket, and Dustin Strand are those drivers. Strand has finished with podiums in all three races, while Balcaen and Seng have two top fives. Hapala's best run was sixth last Friday, in a race that saw him run as high as fourth.
Strand leads all drivers at River Cities with six wins this season. Mike Balcaen has three, Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Emerson Duty Free MasterSbilt, has two, while Tom Corcoran, driver of the No. T1 Greg's Lawn Care Rocket, Donny Schatz, driver of the No, 15 K3 Farms Rocket, Brad Seng, and Don Shaw have one each. Dustin Strand has a big lead at River Cities in weekly action, as he leads Brad Seng by 32 points heading into the final race for track points this Friday. Mike Balcaen, Shane Edginton, driver of the No. 4 General Signs Victory by Moyer, and Zach Naastad, driver of the No. Z17 Q&Z Plumbing Heating Millenium, round out the top five.
Racing begins at five on Monday evening. Remember, every fan who comes out on Monday receives a free ticket to the 'Prelude to the Johnny' at River Cities on September 8th. You can find out more about the River Cities Speedway at our Tracks page.
Brad Seng has seen Dustin Strand eat away at his lead in the NLRA series standings. Seng's 62 point lead he took into the race at the Red River Valley Speedway on July 17th, had dwindled to just 16 markers, as the areas hottest driver Dustin Strand looks to defend his NLRA title, and win his first Wissota national Late Model title. Shane Edginton is third, while Mike Balcaen and Cole Schill, driver of the No. 44 Gateway Chevrolet MasterSbilt, round out the top five.
Steffen Snare, driver of the No. 71S Northern Sanitation Bloomquist, sits sixth, with Jeff Hapala in seventh, and Tom Corcoran eighth. Corcoran is in position to finish in the top ten with the series for the first time since 2005. Ryan Corbett, driver of the No. C4 Greenworks Landscaping MasterSbilt, is ninth, and is close to clinching his first top ten with the series since 2001. Steve Anderson, driver of the No. 9 Jimmy Johns Pierce, rounds out the top ten.
