Series rookie Rusty Kollman, driving the No. 2RK Kollman Furnace Repair MB Custom joined Strand's No. 71 Q&Z Plumbing and Heating Millenium on the front row as the field came to life at the beginning of the race.
Brad Seng led the first two trips around the high-banked quarter-mile in his No. 12S S&S Transport MB Custom before a multi-car pileup slowed the race for the first time.
On the restart that followed, Strand lined up on the outside and ran around the cushion to take the lead. Following Strand past Seng and into second was Tyler Peterson's No. 1TPO QuickLift Rocket XR1.
Peterson and Seng remained close to the leader as they began to negotiate through lapped traffic before the lap ten mark.
Strand's lead was saved by the second caution of the race, as he went on to lead through a few more cautions that slowed the pace in the middle of the 25 lapper.
Peterson continued to hound Strand for the lead, pulling even to his inside on several restarts in challenges for the top spot.
The final cautions with nine and then seven laps left gave Strand a clear racetrack with which to work, as he went on to win his 29th series feature.
"I think those cautions saved my butt," Strand said in victory lane. I didn't like to see the cautions, but they came at the perfect time."
Strand continued, "I knew we had a pretty good lead, but... got caught up in the middle on the last lap. And I thought [I was] gonna throw it away on the last lap here, but it worked out good."
Tyler Peterson was second, with Brad Seng third, Joey Pederson fourth in the No. 7P Dahlstrom Motors Rocket XR1, and Bryce Sward completed the top five. Sward charged from 22nd to win the hard charger award in the No. 1-2 Mike Rasmusen Trucking MB Custom.
Kollman, Peterson, and Brad Seng were the heat winners.
The series continued west for another visit to Devils Lake Speedway in Doyon, ND on Saturday night. 20 cars took the track for the second 25 lap finale of the weekend.
Dustin Strand again started up front with John Seng joining him on the front row in the No. 21S TRENDLess MB Custom. Strand took the early lead and led through the first half of the race. The father and son Seng duo was starting to reel in Strand as he ripped around the top of the high-banked third-mile oval.
A slowdown on the 17th round saw the Seng's capitalize on the ensuing restart, with the elder Seng taking the point for three laps.
John Seng remained within striking distance, however, as he entered in a door-to-door battle for the lead following Strand nearly exiting the racing surface over the top of turn four.
John Seng took the lead on lap 20 and went on to win by just over a second over Brad Seng.
“I honestly don't even have words,” Seng said following his first career series win. “I thought it was good down low, and I just stuck to it. I saw Strand and my dad and a couple others… Sward was up there for a little bit, and they were kind of running around but I thought I was pretty good on the bottom and stuck to it and it stayed with me the whole race, so I couldn't be happier. I thought for sure I was going to drill [a tractor tire] and blow the whole thing but luckily, we stuck to it, and it feels good to get this one all the way.”
Brad Seng was second, with Shane Edginton third in the No. 5E Performance Auto Sniper, Tyler Peterson fourth, and Mike Greseth fifth in the No. 17 Quality Enignes Rocket XR1.
Bryce Sward, Edginton, and John Seng were the heat winners.
Mike Greseth will bring a 12-point lead over Dustin Strand into another three-race set this weekend that starts at Norman County Raceway on Thursday night, returns to River Cities on Friday, and concludes Saturday night at Greenbush Race Park.
