This Saturday night, the NLRA will once again race alongside the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association, as the upper-midwest's two premier racing series will share the spotlight at the speedway for the third time in three years.
Devils Lake Speedway owner, and former series competitor, Nolan Olmstead ramped up his program this off-season, adding the Sprints and Lates full time, along with a USMTS Modified show, and the five-thousand-to-win Golden Hammer Classic for B-Mods.
Last week was the season opener in Devils Lake, as arguably the best racing of the weekend was featured at the track. Ricky Weiss and Dustin Strand duked it out for the win in the late stages of the event. It was set to be the rubber match as the pair have battled late for wins in the recent past. Strand stole a win from Weiss by .035 seconds in August 2015, while Weiss got the win over Strand last July.
The pair made contact in turn four while coming to the checkered, sending Strand into the guard rail. Weiss was charged with the caution, giving the win to defending I-94 Speedway champ Cole Schill, driver of the No. 44 Mid Ag Dispatch MasterSbilt by JMR.
Brad Seng, driver of the No. 12S S&S Transport MB Custom, finished second, with Shane Edginton, driver of the No. 4 Performance Auto Victory in third. Ryan Corbett, driver of the Corbett Trucking No. C4, and Travis Robertson, driver of the No. 1R Tires Plus MasterSbilt, rounded out top five.
Seng leads all drivers with four previous victories at the speedway, with Strand, Weiss, and Mike Balcaen having scored three wins a piece. Ryan Corbett and Bill Mooney, driver of the No. 2 Toyota of Grand Forks MasterSbilt by JMR, have one win each.
Racing is set to begin at seven again this Saturday, as the track set a brisk pace in the running of their program last week. The five-class program event started at ten after seven last Saturday, and was done at a quarter-to-ten. The speedway also features a bar and grill, with an adjacent deck, which provides a great view of the track.
