Former NLRA Driver Tim Sattler Passes Away

Former NLRA driver Tim Sattler passed away this past weekend at the age of 53. Sattler raced Late Models in our area from 1995 to 1998, and again in 2001 and 2002. On behalf of the entire NLRA, we would like to send our condolences to Tim's family and friends during this difficult time. Above is a slideshow of Tim during his racing career.

Thank you so much from the family. Tim enjoyed being a part of the NLRA family and competing at the speedway. To everyone that helped Tim and the rest of us get better, thank you. The speedway and all the racers held a special place in Tim’s heart. Many spectators don’t understand what it takes to put a race car together and compete. It takes so much to make racing happen. It is a commitment that few will undertake and even fewer will understand! Thanks to the River Cities Speedway and the NLRA guys for doing this.

A letter to our sons, Mark, Ryan and Paul:

Don’t know if you boys remember Tim Sattler, #21, who raced late models with/ against us in the 90’s and early 2000’s. He was a really good guy and worked for RDO Equipment in GF, ND.

He passed away yesterday, at 53 years young. His two boys are hockey players and football players. Young guys, late bantams/ early high school. He was a really good guy and always happy and joyful and loved the opportunity to race and proud of his boys. He would talk to me about your 3 adventures and how to go about getting to the “next level”…

It’s not like we were close, but he was part of the NLRA family and very supportive and going to race at the tracks to make our organization exist and prosper. Plus, he was just one of us: Someone who raced, someone who put a car together, maintained, fixed and made better, searched for sponsors, hauled to/ from the tracks, stayed late in the pits to talk with all of us or his family, friends and fans and after the lights went out, another week of work on the car and back at it each week.

I am saddened by his loss….never expected it, thought you’d like to know…there is a nice deal on Tim on the NLRA.org site too for you to peek at.

After all these years of not racing, I guess at heart, I am still there, or better, I wish I still was. You boys were a big part of my doing what we did. I am grateful and thankful we all shared the late model together. It is one of the many wonderful experiences and memories I share with you and mom.

I love you and thought you’d like to know. Hope you are all well and about your business with great pride, excitement and better today than yesterday. Again, I love you….no, I adore you.

Jon, believe or not, Tim spoke often of you because of your sons and hockey. Thank you for sharing your letter. Family is everything and Tim enjoyed talking about his family and all the other kids and families that he became a part of. God speed my friend!

Jon Bittner,
I believe it was you who gave Tim the name of my middle son Jack Doda to Tim as he was coaching his youngest son Garrin spring hockey! Jack was fortunate enough to play for “coach Sattler” for a few spring/fall hockey seasons! Words can not express what an impact he’s had on Jack not only in the world of hockey but also on being a good person! Tim would often pull jack aside at different hockey tournaments and give him those magic words Jack needed to hear!! Those are the unforgettable coaches!! We are forever greatful to “coach Sattler!”
