Donny Schatz has announced he will compete with the Northern Late Model Racing Association at two area tracks. Schatz, who is the five-time and defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion, will race Wednesday night June the 19th at the Norman County Raceway in Ada, MN. Then on Friday Night June the 21st, he will pull double duty and race with both the NLRA and the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND.
Schatz is no stranger to Late Model competition, as he was part of the Prelude to the Dream race at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway in Ohio last year. On Memorial Day weekend this season, Schatz picked up a weekend sweep of Late Model races at the Basin Speedway in Williston, ND, and the Nodak Speedway in Minot, ND in his No. 15 Fargo Petro/Fastlane Car Wash backed machine. This season in his sprint car, Schatz, currently ranks third and trails leader Daryn Pittman by 146 points, and is tied with Pittman and Tim Kaeding for most wins on the tour this year with five. He has two previous victories with the World of Outlaws at River Cities Speedway, one in 2008, the other in 2009.
"We're excited about the opportunity to give the fans a chance to see someone compete in both classes," admitted Schatz. "The World of Outlaws race is the focus and we really need to get our STP car back to victory lane at River Cities. We've had some good runs up there, but it's been a few years since we've won one. There are so many great fans that support the racing in Grand Forks and we're going to do everything we can to win that World of Outlaws feature. Running the dirt late model has been a lot of fun and it's just something to remind me of what it's like to race for fun. It's been a big learning, curve and I know it's going to be tough up there. Those guys are really good. I'm just learning as much as I can every time I get into the car. It should be a great night of racing. I know my STP guys are really looking forward to us getting up there and having a chance to win that Sprint car feature. We'll go out and do our best."
